North Shropshire Lee Democrat wins ‘earthquake’ win

In the early morning hours of Friday, December 17, 2021, the Liberal Democratic Party achieved one of the most stunning electoral successes of any party in a by-election. The swing of 34 percent from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats was a political earthquake.

However, this example shows that change is possible, even in the most likely areas. No one should ever vote for any party based on how they have always voted in the past. We need to shop a little more and see which candidates and parties best suit our needs locally and nationally. Conservative voters in North Shropshire were, in the words of one Conservative MP, “neglected for years” by a system that had always assumed that seat was “safe”.

But this victory would not have been possible without the voters “lending” us their votes. And I use this word deliberately. There are Conservative and Labor voters who voted for the Liberal Democrats for the first time, and now we need to not only thank those who voted tactically, but prove to the people who gave us their vote that it was worth it. Time will only show if we deserve it.

But there is no party. There is no filter. No circuit can be truly secure. The scandals that swept Boris’ bus – the lies, the parties, their colleagues’ jobs, the chaotic way things were done – disgusted traditional conservatives who feel the incumbent prime minister has abandoned what they saw as traditional Tory values. The truth is, you get what you vote for. But if you don’t like what you voted for, you can vote for another party. Another filter. And now, the Liberal Democrats are the party that listens and wins.
