According to Earthquakes Canada, an event under five is unlikely to cause any damage

A rumble of a magnitude three was recorded about 14 kilometers northwest of Sudbury at 6:53 am this morning.

Rather than an earthquake, the event was mining-related, Nick Ackerley, a seismologist with Earthquakes Canada told Sudbury.com, pointing to the Vale-operated Creighton Mine as the location. There may have been additional rumbles following the initial event, but he said the data had yet to be analyzed.

Sudbury.com has reached out to Vale for comment but has yet to receive a response.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake was “mildly felt in Sudbury”, with people from across the region taking to social media to report they were feeling something.

The approximate location of the earthquake was at a depth of one kilometer.

The scale of volume is logarithmic, as Earthquakes Canada explains on their website. This means that a magnitude six earthquake produces vibrations of 10 times the amplitude of those produced by a magnitude 5 earthquake and 100 times greater than a magnitude 4 earthquake.

They stated that an earthquake with a magnitude of less than five was unlikely to cause any damage.

Ackerley said such events are “very common” in the Sudbury area, as well as other mining centres, but are nonetheless surprising to those who work near the events.
