The United Nations on Tuesday raised the death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck western Afghanistan the previous day to 26, saying the quakes destroyed three villages of nearly 800 homes.

At least four people were injured, including women and children, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. On Tuesday, villagers in the area were still searching for family members and removing objects stuck under the mud.

Survivors of twin earthquakes on Tuesday said they had to spend the night without shelter in freezing temperatures after hundreds of buildings were damaged in the quake.

Meanwhile, rescuers searched for more survivors of Monday afternoon’s earthquakes that rocked the Cadiz region in the western Badghis province, a rural area hard to reach by road.

According to the UN statement, hundreds of adobe homes that were destroyed were already exposed due to the heavy rains in the country. Many survivors spent the night in a shelter in their relatives’ homes while others remained in the rubble of their homes.

The US Geological Survey said two earthquakes separated by magnitudes of 4.9 and 5.3 on the Richter scale shook the region.

“Yesterday’s earthquake was a very terrible accident. We have never seen anything like this,” Ahmed Shah, whose house in Cadiz was damaged, told AFP.

“Because of the cracks in the walls and ceilings of our homes, we stayed out all night in this cold weather. No one came to help and people had to pull out those who were buried.”
