Earthquakes are a fact of life in the area – native of Cowichan Valley
I expect that few people on Vancouver Island felt the 4.7 magnitude earthquake on January 2 that occurred 156 kilometers off the island’s coast near Port Ellis.
This seismic event, caused by the movement of active tectonic plates along subduction faults where plates collide off the island’s west coast, caused nearly 100 smaller earthquakes of zero or greater magnitudes that were recorded within a 100 km radius of that earthquake.
It happened in the area where the “Kabir” is supposed to originate. Where the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate meets the North American plate.
This massive earthquake, which could occur any time from this moment to hundreds of years from now, is expected to be on the order of 9.0 or more, devastating West Coast communities along the North American continent.
The last major earthquake in that area occurred in January 1700, and we know this because Japanese record-keepers recorded a large tsunami that struck their island on the other side of the Pacific at that time, and stories have been passed down orally through generations of locals. First Nations tells the tale of great waves coming ashore on the west coast of Vancouver Island and wiping out entire villages.
Since Duncan and much of the other densely populated areas of the Cowichan Valley lie on the east coast of Vancouver Island, many people believe we will survive the worst disaster when it occurs.
But in 2016, Canadian and American seismologists confirmed the existence of a previously unknown seismic fault zone just five kilometers south of Victoria, called the Devil’s Mountain Fault Zone.
The area actually consists of a series of faults that stretch from Washington state to Victoria.
The Devil’s Mountain fault zone lies entirely on the North American plate, which typically generates smaller, shallower crustal earthquakes, but likely as high as 7.5 on the Richter scale.
This can cause a lot of damage to the valley if (or when) it does.
As I mentioned in a column I wrote four years ago, a report by BC Hydro and the Geographical Survey of Canada in 2003, must have been of equal or greater importance to the people of the valley.
This report visualizes a towering wave the size of a six-story building rising from the Salish Sea and rolling west, hitting the Gulf Islands and the east coast of Vancouver Island just minutes after a major earthquake occurred in the area.
Apparently, between 17 million and 20 million tons of sediment accumulate at the mouth of the Fraser River in the Salish Sea each year.
The study concluded that a major earthquake in the region could trigger a major underwater landslide of continuously accumulating sediment that could cause massive tsunamis that would quickly come our way.
This could wreak havoc on coastal communities in this area, and the water could, in theory, reach a much higher level in a worst-case scenario.
Other experts have since concluded that such an event is highly unlikely, but they haven’t completely ruled it out.
The truth is that we live in a highly seismically active region.
The Cowichan Valley Regional District advises that every home should have a readily available emergency kit that should contain an adequate supply of dry food, water, tools, dry clothes, flashlights and other necessary equipment to last at least a week in the event of an earthquake or some other natural disaster.
People cannot be guaranteed to stay indoors when an earthquake strikes, so they should also have an emergency kit in their cars that should contain the essentials; Including food, water, medicine, safety glasses and work gloves.
This can be upsetting, but being prepared could save the lives of you and your family in the event of a natural disaster.
