Sand Springs Students Experience Earthquake While Learning About Them In Class

Students at a Sand Springs elementary had the science lesson of a lifetime when they were learning all about earthquakes and how they happen.

In the middle of the lesson, the room started to shake and they experienced an earthquake.

Ms. Myers fourth grade science class at Angus Valley Elementary is all about hands on learning.

The students were in the middle of learning about tectonic plates and fault lines on January 31 just after 11:10 when they felt the whole classroom shake.

“This is the luckiest day ever, I’ve never felt an earthquake before,” said one student.

Ms. Myers said she’s never experienced anything quite like this in her 11 years of teaching.

After the students said they felt the room shake, she went to the teachers across the hall to see if they felt something too.

“It was kind of like I just needed to look around the room and recognize the fact I wasn’t the only one thinking what was happening,” Ms. Myers said.

“It was crazy because whenever we were learning about it we were right at the plates and we felt the earthquake,” one student said.

The kids in Ms. Myers class said they all thought it was really cool.

Some didn’t really know what was happening, some were a little scared, but they all said they know how lucky they were to experience the earthquake like they did.

“There’s like no chance it’s ever going to happen again if you’re learning about something, and then it actually happens,” said one student.

Ms. Myers said she couldn’t have planned it any better and she hopes it’s something her students remember for years to come.

“There’s lessons you plan out every detail, every aspect you can that just flop, and then you just have some things where it just aligns and it’s that beautiful organic moment, that I couldn’t have planned it any better,” she said.
