On the morning of May 18, 1980, while I was standing outside my family’s home in Bountiful, Utah, decorated with a two-piece strawberry shortcake cut, trying to find the valve in the submerged sprinkler box so that I could perform the routine work of turning off the sprinklers, I noticed Dust when I first thought it was snow settling on the wet grass, boardwalk, street and then the shoulders of my flannel pajamas. One of those who lost lives belongs to an 83-year-old man named Harry Randall Truman. He owned a hut on Lake Spirit at the base of the volcano. Days before the explosion, officials repeatedly urged him to leave. He was quoted as saying, “I will stay here, because I will tell you the reason, my home and my life (improbable word curse) have been here. My wife and I vowed years and years ago that we would never leave Lake Spirit. We loved it. It is part of me, and I’m part of this mountain (An unexpected word of curse).

This is why people stay. Earthquakes, fires, floods, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis, and hurricanes occur. People intend to buy homes in areas where there is an inherent risk from the potential risk. Not because they have a desire to die but because the benefit outweighs the risks. Much North Utah sits on one giant fault line; And so, in a way, we did all of that.

In fact, just a few months ago (it looks like years since before the earthquake, before COVID, pre-riots), I moved to a house sitting directly on a mountain. My backyard is a forest of oak and pine trees. One of the prophetic comments that came from my stepfather’s mouth when he first came to our home, “It is better that there is no fire.” The next night, there was a fire. Our street was completely cleared.

Before we bought the house, we discussed the dangers of living directly at the base of the mountain. We talked about earthquakes and fire potential. We even discussed possible floods after a fire broke out. We measured risks, reduced them as much as possible and moved forward. When I go home in the evening after work and sit in our backyard to relax, watch and listen to a variety of birds and wildlife with the smell of pine and dirt, I have no remorse. The truth is known, this is where I am now.

On the morning of May 1980, my 13-year-old myself couldn’t understand why anyone would choose to live in a place where lava and ash could destroy so much that it rained gray soot for days all over the northwest. Ironically, my stepfather, who was not my stepfather at the time, lived in this beautiful condition. Not only did he choose to stay, years later, my mom married and moved there too. I visited a lot. It is a beautiful place. The many hiking paths, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and evergreen forests are truly amazing. Were it not for the constant rain, I would have lived there by myself.

After a few years, they exchanged volcanoes with earthquakes. She recently helped some Alabama customers find a home here.
