A 5.0 magnitude earthquake shakes southeastern Turkey

ANKARA, TURKEY – A moderate earthquake in southeastern Turkey forced people to take to the streets in panic on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the 5.0 earthquake was centered in the town of Butorg, Malatya Province.

The state-run Anatolia news agency reported that the quake was felt in several neighboring provinces and some people ran from their homes for fear of a building collapsing.

“We have not received any negative news about the earthquake so far,” Anadolu quoted Malatya governor Aydin Barros as saying.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which lies above two major fault lines. In January, a strong earthquake centered in the neighboring province of Elazig killed 41 people, including four in Malatya.

The worst earthquake in Turkey in decades came in 1999, when two powerful earthquakes struck the northwest, killing nearly 18,000 people.
