Scientists say a massive earthquake could strike the Bay Area at any moment, according to a USA Today report.

The US Geological Survey reported that an earthquake of magnitude 3.9 shook North Bay early Thursday morning. The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m., 12 miles northeast of Healdsburg in Geezers County, Sonoma County.

But the so-called Big One could happen at any moment. Seismologists are interested in the Hayward Fault, which cuts through densely populated Alameda County.

The Hayward Fault produces large earthquakes on average every 150 years, according to the USGS. The last major tremor on the fault was a magnitude 6.8 in 1868.

Scientists estimate that today’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake could kill hundreds of people and cause billions of dollars in damage.

There are growing calls to simulate what a major California earthquake might look like without actually happening. So what does that mean? NBC Bay Area’s Raj Maathai spoke to seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, to get some insight.

How to prepare for a major earthquake Be prepared that there will be no electrical or water service for days or weeks. Create an earthquake kit with food, water, and gear for 72 hours. Have a combination of weather radio, flashlight, and portable mobile phone charger ready to have a cash back. Know where the shutoff valve and tool are for your natural gas line.
