James Caravano: Like the heroes of D-Day, members of the National Guard are defending us now – this time from the US riots

On June 6, 1944, he was among those who took the first horrific steps on the wet sands of Normandy from the National Guard of the 29th Infantry Division in Maryland. They bled like their comrades in arms. They fought with the same power out of the beaches. When those who survived the bleak tricks survived over German defenses, they changed the course of World War II.

D-Day – exactly 76 years ago – is remembered as a remarkable achievement for the older generation. However, D-Day was only one day. In addition to serving abroad, members of the armed forces, from militia citizens in the colonial era to our modern-day warriors, faithfully and selflessly protected American societies for two and a half centuries. They saved San Francisco after the Great Earthquake and the Fire of 1906. They helped save New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Recently, the National Guard and active duty forces have helped bend the curve during the COVID-19 outbreak. People, for example, marveled at the speed and efficiency with which they were able to turn the Javits Center in New York City into a hospital and its staff with Armed Medical Services personnel.

But some believe that these soldiers and women have moved from the good guys to the bad guys in less than a month.

A chorus of critics – including some mayors, mayors, activists, and journalists – bemoan the “militarization” of America. This means employing troops to help restore peace in cities devastated by uncontrolled violence after the death of George Floyd, a black handcuffed man who died after a Minneapolis white police officer knelt on his neck for about nine minutes.

More Opinion

On Saturday, the National Guard tweeted: “Today, more than 43,300 members of the National Guard in 34 states and Washington city are helping law enforcement authorities in ongoing civil unrest, while more than 37,000 Guard soldiers and pilots continue to support the COVID-19 response.”

Complaints that the use of the National Guard creates an alarming “militarization” could not be more deceptive.

Let’s start thinking about what the military actually do when typically used in the United States, the primary role assigned is to protect property. This mission is not incompatible with legal protests in any way.

The presence of the National Guard is only a problem for people determined to destroy – those who want to break things, burn things and harm people.

In fact, people who exercise first amendment rights – even those who practice peaceful civil disobedience – are also served. The army is there to protect them too – and stop the violence and looting so that they can demonstrate peacefully.

The second task that the army usually performs in our country is to support law enforcement. This is only a “militarization” response. Instead, the army liberates, empowers and supports police, firefighting and EMT personnel so they can do their job. This makes our streets safer, not less free.

Cities can use the military to help deal with riots and looting without hurting the cause of peaceful protesters.

In many of our cities it is very clear that these additional resources are required. Peaceful protesters fighting for a good cause are not the only ones who took to the streets. Many others are trying to take advantage of the current protests over George Floyd’s death, using it as an opportunity to turn into riots and looting – intolerable violence. Also present in the mix are professional agitators – local as well as foreign – from various political groups.

Dealing with all of this is tedious. Failure to bring the assets necessary to protect the rights, freedom, and property of all citizens is wrong.

It is also worth thinking about what the mission is and who is doing the military. When our soldiers are sent to our streets, they are there to protect our freedoms, our lives, and our possessions – not to drive them out.

Our forces serve under legally elected civilian powers. They support those powers; It does not replace them. How these powers may be used by these forces is governed by a wide range of laws, all of which have gone through a constitutional rally. The claim that obtaining military assistance to suppress violence is unconstitutional is absolute nonsense.

Since the National Guard and Active Service Forces serve under civilian authority, their effectiveness is often determined not by their training and capabilities (which are usually more than sufficient), but by the competence of the civilian leaders who manage them.

Cities can use the military to help deal with riots and looting without hurting the cause of peaceful protesters. Washington is an example.

Yes, there was a lot of brawl between the mayor and the federal authorities over the use of the National Guard. But after the fight ended and the guards spread, the looting stopped. People continue to conduct legal protests unabated.

These are facts that are appropriately ignored by people who denounce “militarization” and insulting service personnel who want to endanger their lives to maintain peace in our streets.

As we remember these American heroes who stormed Normandy beaches 76 years ago, we must also remember these soldiers here at home who are guarding the corners of our streets, protecting our individual rights as the nation works its way through a very difficult division season and disease.
