New sensors show how buildings in Wellington were in earthquakes

Wellington is known as a seismic hotspot, but building owners want to know what really happens when the ground shakes.

Wellington should use its position as a “laboratory” for earthquakes, according to a property owner who uses news sensors to influence earthquakes on his buildings.

The capital is increasingly using new technology to measure the precise impact of the tremors, with 15 buildings in the city equipped with new sensors and a board in trade talks to fit around 100 others in the city.

Levin’s recent earthquakes were the first major test of sensors in Wellington buildings and the results were surprising.

Ian Cassels, a real estate developer in Wellington, installed seismic sensors in four of his buildings, and said more needed to be done to paint an accurate picture of how the city behaved during earthquakes.

Cassells was happy to share the results of seismic sensors in his buildings to create a better picture of what was happening around the city.

“I know the reaction of the buildings was different from what the engineers expected.”

“Some of them moved more than they thought and some of them moved less than they thought.”

By collecting data from real events, he said, they can see the performance of their buildings “in reality, not in theory.”

The owner of the building, Ian Cassells, says the real earthquake performance data on the buildings are “of great value”.

“It is tremendous value and we must do it all over the city because we are the earthquake laboratory in Wellington.”

Castles said that engineers sometimes limit themselves with “code design”.

“They design it on their computers and continue to rate buildings based on theoretical movements … but the actual earthquake is a different thing.”

“Actual performance is something they were not aware of at all.”

Structural engineer Scott Miller of Sylvester Clark said that real life has always been a better test of how the building handled the earthquake than operating computer models.

In the Levin earthquake, one of the Castle’s buildings recorded the earthquake at about ten percent of the building’s structural capacity.

“We were not expecting the acceleration we reached at the top of one of its buildings, and the other buildings where we had sensors did not react much at all.”

Miller said that the soil type under the foundations, the type of building, and the period can have an impact on how it interacts with seismic activity.

“The more information we can collect and demonstrate positive steps in our understanding of our environment, the better.”

A Wellington City Council spokesman said it has an arrangement with the GNS and another scientific organization that allows access to data from accelerometers and sensors in about 15 buildings scattered across the city.

“The sensors gave us high-quality information on May 25 when the earthquake struck Levin – we were able to use the information quickly to make a call that it is unlikely that the buildings were damaged.”

He also stressed that the council was in the process of finalizing a trade agreement that would allow the installation of about 100 other sensors from structures, including buildings and traffic lights control boxes around the city.

There are 724 buildings registered as earthquake-prone in the Wellington area, many of which are in the capital’s central business district.
