Death toll rises after 7.3-magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Japan
Two people were killed after a strong 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan last night, lasting for more than two minutes, triggering a tsunami warning and plunging millions into darkness.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed two deaths and 94 injuries, four of them seriously.

The Fuji News Network said a man in his 60s died after falling from the second floor of a building in the city of Soma, Fukushima.
Kyodo News reported that a terrified man in his 70s had a fatal heart attack.
The earthquake occurred at around 11:30 p.m. local time last night off the coast of Japan – about 89 kilometers from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which is in the process of being decommissioned after a 9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami triggered the catastrophic collapse of the plant in 2011. .
Tokyo Electric Power Holding Company, the plant’s operator, said no anomalies were found at the site.

Earthquake ‘lasted for what seemed like an eternity’
Speaking to Today, CNN correspondent Blake Isig said the quake was felt in Tokyo – about 250 kilometers to the northeast.
“It went on for what felt like an eternity,” he said.

“I was lying in bed with my kids when the shaking really started. I immediately grabbed a pillow and covered their heads while my wife was in the living room.
“I sat straight away under a table. She was able to videotape in her cell our TV, our plants, our furniture banging on the walls, everything swaying back and forth.
This was 250 kilometers from where the really violent shaking occurred.”
Nearly two million homes were cut off in northeastern Japan and Tokyo after the earthquake, which hit the coast of Japan. Since then, energy has been restored to many homes.
Residents in both Miyagi and Fukushima were put on high alert after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami watch.
Residents have been told to avoid coastal areas.

No injuries were reported, but a number of services were suspended.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said authorities were scrambling to assess the damage.
“We are doing our best in rescue operations and putting people’s lives first,” he said.
He urged residents in affected areas to be extra vigilant about possible major aftershocks for about a week.
