Scott Seymour, a veteran golf instructor at the University of Oklahoma Wesleyan, didn’t have to go outside the Washington County boundaries to find one of his next potential rivals.

Seymour confirmed on Friday morning that Dewey Hayden Thornton’s multi-sports warrior had been verbally committed to playing the Eagles Linux squad.

The coach added that to keep up with that, Thornton had already enrolled as a student at OKWU.

“I already played with him (Thursday),” said Seymour, adding that Thornton had turned into a powerful round, despite working all day. “From what I could see he is a great striker with a good short match.”

Thornton founded a British-quality golf career for Dewey Hay. Junior Qualification (2019) for the state championship.

Except for a severe earthquake, a huge comet strike, or a pandemic it was also certain that it was eligible in the spring of 2020.

Well, there was a pandemic.

In March, Oklahoma State closed all schools – canceling the remainder of spring sports.

As a result, Thornton could not compete with his last year in high school.

However, Seymour still relies on Thornton to sharpen his match at the start of the college season.

This is because Thornton can now focus on golf all year round, instead of focusing on soccer in summer and autumn and basketball in winter.

“Hayden has reached where he is now by playing golf only four months a year,” said Seymour. “It would be crazy to see how quickly he could improve now.”

Seymour also estimates that Thornton is a good athlete.

“Certainly,” the coach said. “I always equal this myself. I played football and basketball myself. When I search for recruits, I am looking for children who have played many sports. … I told Hayden to keep his head down and keep working hard.”

In contrast to the shattered disappointment of losing the golf season, Thornton transformed into a remarkable sporty year.

During summer and autumn, he played a major role in Dewey’s height on the flat iron from medium to gorgeous.

The Dogers’ team has had a regular 7-3 season – the best by the Dewey team since 1994.

Thornton, who is 6 feet high, plus 2, weighing 170 lbs, excelled as a receiver who breaks the game – able to extend the field vertically for the game of passing over the top, or making rugged hunting in traffic with cannons on him.

It also gave a boost to the back end of the defense.

Not bad for a man who only played basketball and golf during his previous years in high school.

During the 2019-20 winter, Thornton also starred for the Dewey Basketball team. Although the team struggled to win, Thornton made a solemn and swift presence, and a difficult match for other teams to guard against due to its length, speed, and sport.

He had some time to prepare for the golf before the plug was pulled out in mid-March, before Dewey entered any tournaments.

Although Thornton enrolled in school less than 10 miles from OKWU, he required a middleman to bring him closer to Seymour.

“The way I found out about Hayden … is one of the players I trained. He played with Hayden in Tulsa. He asked Hayden if he had signed up with anyone.

Then the player got ready and Seymour started calling.

“He’s a very good student for us, which is Oklahoma Wesleyan and that’s important,” said Seymour, in addition to Thornton’s promise to the golf program.

“I am excited about the improvement it can make in a short period of time,” said Seymour.

Talented class

Thornton is one of four young golfers who have committed to OKWU or signed LOIs.

The other three are Evan Wooldridge from London, England. Liam Creed from Scotland; Andrew Gibson of Dallas.

“We are still a very good team,” said Seymour. “Next year we will be mostly new students and a lot of second year students.”

This team may need one or two seasons to fully mature, but Seymour sees some key upcoming achievements.

“Despite the youth, we will be strong.”

On the women’s side, OKWU golf faces an important unknown couple.

Because the spring golf season was canceled, NAIA gave the senior athletes an additional year of eligibility.

Two older OKWUs, Korena Aills and Jordan Leonard, have been important components of the team’s success – and growing national respect – in the past two seasons.

Equally, they both got guaranteed jobs and Seymour doesn’t know if they will benefit from another year of school golf.

He pointed out that if not, then the women’s team would also be very young too.
