Are you ready for another outbreak?

Nationwide – As businesses reopen, Americans get haircuts, eat in restaurants, shop in stores – and do all the things that were missing during work during the first hours of the COVID-19 epidemic this spring. This is a worrying trend for preparedness experts, who say many of us are doing little to prepare for what public health officials expect might be a worse outbreak this fall.

“After disasters, people get tired of dealing with this disaster,” said Jeff Edelstein, founder of SOS Survival Products in Van Nuys, an emergency supply store that sells everything from freeze-dried food to mylar sleeping bags to splints. In business since 1989, “We have dealt with the Los Angeles riots in 1992, and all the major earthquakes over the past 31 years all over the world, but for the time being, we are more satisfied than prepared.”

Building relationships with neighbors and society

It’s fatigue COVID. But what exactly do you have to do this summer to prepare for another hike?

If the coronavirus reappears with vengeance this fall, it will coincide with the flu season and can be associated with natural disasters, such as hurricanes or forest fires. So the willingness is not just a matter of storing all the elements that you learned that last March you did not have to successfully house in place but for additional layers of the emergency occurring at the same time.

John Rami, the founder of ThePrepared.com, said to stay, the good news is that “90% of the preparedness basis is the same regardless of scenario.” “The preparation is much less than bunkers and bullets and much more than beans and AIDS.”

“Part of being a modern and rational person is understanding the potential risks,” he added. “Alien fascist zombies are not potential risks. In this country, your money and your health are your most important risks.

Put your money in the system

About 40% of Americans will struggle to get $ 400 to pay unexpected expenses without using a credit card, according to the 2018 Federal Reserve Survey of Families Economics. Today, this statistic is likely to be worse, as the epidemic has led to unprecedented layoffs that have caused the US unemployment rate to rise to 13.3%.

Rami said that financial problems increase a person’s risk of emergencies and reduce their ability to deal with them because they have fewer options and resources. Individuals with shaky financial resources don’t have to spend money buying anything other than a two-week supply of food and water unless they also have a rainy day and take steps to reduce their debt.

Get healthy

According to the American Centers for Disease Control, six out of 10 American adults suffer from chronic disease, and four out of 10 suffer from two or more. The mortality rate for those who develop COVID-19 is higher for individuals with certain underlying health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes.

Rami said that being unhealthy makes a person less able to cope with the underlying physical requirements in an emergency, such as walking or carrying a go bag. Often, people who start preparing prefer to buy equipment rather than eat better or exercise, he added. But physical fitness reduces a person’s risk of health-related emergencies and increases their chances of survival.

Rami said that there is no single way to get in shape. The most important thing is to find what suits you and move. It is suggested to change one variable at a time, such as eating less food for a few weeks, then eating better or starting to walk, then doing some cardio exercises.

Maintaining a non-perishable food and water supply for two weeks

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends that people store at least two weeks of food and water for each family member. This means that at least one gallon of water per person per day and food is not perishable and easy to store.

An easy way to gradually build this supply up, so every time you go to the grocery store, pick up an extra can of tuna, pasta, or a gallon of water.

Make sure you have enough medicines and personal protective equipment

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also recommends that you periodically check your prescription drugs to ensure that you have continuous supplies. Make sure you also have enough over-the-counter medications, including pain relievers, stomach treatments, cough and cold medicines, and fluids containing electrolytes and vitamins.

The COVID-19 outbreak has already prompted people to buy masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. With additional disease outbreaks, people should keep this symptom.

Have a plan and practice it

Getting supplies is easy. Knowing what to do when a disaster strikes is usually the hard part. Plan what to do in the second wave of coronavirus or some other emergency that often happens because loved ones are not together when it happens.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends that you develop a plan to call each other and reconnect in the event of a separation. They say the plan should be tailored to your specific daily needs and responsibilities of living, including children, pets, elderly relatives, and work.

Once you have a plan, do it.

Think about your options

There are still many unanswered questions about coronavirus, such as when a vaccine will be available, or what role the weather might play in infection rate.

“Nobody knows what the virus will do,” said Jeff Schlegelmilch, deputy director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University and author of the upcoming book, Rethinking Readiness: A Brief Guide to Megadisasters in the 21st Century. “You have uncertainty and decisions to take with serious consequences based on the decision you make.”

Instead of sticking to a single business plan, Schlegelmilch recommends creating a range of options, as many schools do right now to determine whether students should continue distance learning, resume personal lessons, or do a mix of both. The same can be done for families if another order is required to stay at home, to see possible routines for work and childcare.

Note that you may need to evacuate

While COVID requires protection in place and exit as little as possible, a natural disaster on top of another outbreak may require a different strategy.

Hurricanes and earthquakes do not usually come with much advance notice. They often strike suddenly, giving residents seconds or minutes to leave their homes. In these scenarios, it is wise to have a pre-packed ‘travel bag’ for each family member. ThePrepared.com suggests a 20-pound backpack that includes first aid, water, ready-to-eat food, tools, clothing, important personal documents and other prepackaged materials that can be captured in an instant.

Get to know your neighbors

Schlegelmilch said: “Our connection to society, and the neighbors who help the neighbors, is just as important as having the resources for yourself.”

Several studies looking at the Great Depression of the 1930s, Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the nuclear catastrophe caused by the tsunami in Fukushima, Japan, in 2011, found that areas with strongly connected societies were more resilient.

Japan’s earthquake response has been an inspiration for the National Community Emergency Response Team courses that are now offered free of charge in all 50 states. The seven-week class has taught Americans how to put out small fires, basic first aid, evacuation, and research tactics since 1993.
