Earthquake-damaged hiking trails reopen

The famous hiking trail to a cave in Christchurch’s Port Hills will be repaired and officially reopened – more than a decade after it was damaged in earthquakes that hit the area.

A community group applauds City Council’s plans to restore the loop path in Barnett Park in Redcliffs that leads to a large cave in the valley. Contractors began tackling the rocks above the track.

The track has been closed since the 2010-11 earthquakes because wooden stairs and other structures were damaged and boulders were scattered off the cliffs.

For years, walkers and joggers ignored the “closed” council signs though, and entered the path and cavern. On sunny weekends, dozens of people including children can be seen on the closed track. Climbers also use the trail to access several climbing routes and a different cave.

The 2011 earthquakes closed some of Christchurch’s best hiking trails, but some have survived. (First published January 4, 2019).

Martin Ward and Rosemary Neff said Redcliffs residents were upset about allowing runoff into the upper levels of Barnett Park after the earthquakes. The couple, who live locally, are members of a volunteer group called Te Awa Kura-Barnett Park that aims to restore most of the park.

Parks Board President Andrew Rutledge said it would cost about $40,000 to restore the path to its former state.

Once the rock works are completed, expect work on the main path and cave to begin next summer. At this point, only the eastern part of the track will be repaired.

The western part falls under dirtier bluffs. The July 2020 Geotechnical Report on Western Hoaxes reported nearly 30 rock slides in the previous months.

On Wednesday, another Te Awa Kura member, Cynthia Roberts, asked city council members to spend $100,000 to repair the West Side.

Barnett Park has three distinct areas: Well-groomed sports grounds mainly used for football and cricket. dog walking area maintained by the municipality; The area is steep and bloated which has been largely closed off.

Volunteers from Te Awa Kura planted hundreds of Aboriginal people in the upper section last year and will be holding the first planting day of the year on Saturday (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.).

A second planting day is planned for May 28, at the dog walking area.

Volunteers and council staff removed large quantities of bone seeding from the top of Barnett Park last year.

This year, they will target the passion fruit banana. It produces beautiful pink tubular flowers and edible fruit, but it stifles other plants, and is officially an undesirable organism.

Neff said the name Te Awa Kura was being used informally. The group had reached out to Ngai Thoriri but the discussion was postponed until the Covid-19 pandemic subsided.

Ward said the group also hopes the flat area south of the dog park will become a wetland. It was already wet and the engineering could help slow and clean the rainwater coming from the hills. He said Redcliffs residents supported the dog park.

Rutledge said the nearby Heathcote Quarry hiking trail may reopen next summer. Officially closed due to earthquake damage and hazards, it has also been used a lot. The council has allocated $20,000 for repairs.
