Now, the last of the two features is effectively new and won’t just come to the new Pixel Watch either. Google expects to unveil this fully revealed device in the fall. In short, Emergency SOS allows Wear OS to be a user-activated feature of smartwatches. It allows users, with minimal interaction, to contact family members or emergency services in their immediate area.

What’s new other than Emergency SOS features for Wear OS?

Now, as was hinted above, the new features involved will not be greatly restricted by the device. That’s good news considering how earthquake alerts work.

Earthquake alerts are already available on Android in some regions. As its branding indicates, the feature detects earthquakes. This works by using on-device accelerometer data from the phone to detect the earthquake as it is occurring. It then alerts users of danger, provides information to help users stay safe, and then sends a message to surrounding devices. This way, users will know in the area around the emergency as well.

With the recent Google I/O announcement, Google is indicating that more regions will receive the feature “in the near future” as well.

When will these features come?

Google hasn’t detailed when the new emergency SOS features will arrive for Wear OS, or when the earthquake alerts expansion will happen, either.
