Google brings emergency SOS to Wear OS, expands earthquake alerts

What you need to know During the I/O 2022 keynote, Google announced the arrival of Emergency SOS for Wear OS. This is a feature that is already available on our smartphones, but it is coming in smartwatches. Google has also announced that an improved earthquake warning system will soon arrive on smartphones.

Amid all the hardware announcements during the I/O 2022 keynote, Google also shared some new software features that will be rolling out soon. Surrounding personal safety, these newer features are where emergency SOS alerts come to the best Wear OS smartwatches.

This is something that is already available on the best Android phones, as it allows you to easily call a trusted friend or family member or call emergency services from your wrist. Once available, Emergency SOS can easily be activated, with a prompt to select emergency services or trusted contacts.

You’ll also find a large button at the bottom to cancel the SOS call being made, with one to end the call and another that offers more options after the call is made. As expected, your Wear OS smartwatch should be paired with a phone that’s connected to the network or has a built-in cellular connection. We wouldn’t be completely surprised if Emergency SOS for Wear OS didn’t start showing up until the Pixel Watch was officially released.

Google has also confirmed that earthquake warnings are being expanded to “high risk” areas. We expect to learn more about this over the coming months, but Google has not provided details as to which regions the feature will come to.

This isn’t a completely new feature but it does use your phone’s accelerometer along with regional information to determine if an earthquake has occurred. From there, you will receive a notification on your phone and it will then be shared with those around you. If possible, the notification will also provide information regarding how to keep you safe in the event of an earthquake.

We hope these new features arrive sooner rather than later, but with Google’s history, we wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t arrive for at least a month or two. We’ll likely hear more as we get closer to launch.
