Deputy Minister of Lands stops illegal quarries inside earthquake areas

George Meriko Docker, Deputy Minister of Land and Natural Resources, has suspended all illegal quarrying activities in Oblogo in Weija-Gbawe municipality in Greater Accra region.

So he instructed the association to immediately demolish all those illegal buildings.

The deputy minister gave the guidance during a working visit to the region on Wednesday.

“It is essential that the Ministry take decisive, practical and proactive steps to avoid a ‘recurrence of the Abyatsi disaster,'” Mr. Docker said.

“It is known that neither the Ministry nor the Minerals Committee has processed any application or granted any mining license for quarrying operations in this area.”

Mr. Docker stated that the area has been designated as an earthquake prone area and therefore, some activities should not take place there including stone quarrying and sand making.

“Available data from the Ghana Geological Survey indicate that such human activities can lead to landslides or mudslides and cause damage to life and property.”

He ordered the arrest of three craftsmen who were busy building a building on the site and handed them over to the police.

At a meeting with the Geological Survey, earlier this year, she warned that the country could witness another catastrophe if strict measures were not taken to stop the advance of earthquake zones.
