4 dead, 14 injured in 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan Province, China

Four people were killed and 14 others injured after a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted Yan City in southwest China’s Sichuan Province Wednesday afternoon, according to the city’s earthquake relief headquarters.

The earthquake shook Lushan County in Yan in Sichuan at 5:00 p.m. local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The center said that the epicenter of the quake, with a depth of 17 kilometers, was monitored at 30.4 degrees north latitude and 102.9 degrees east longitude.

Sichuan Province experienced the largest 7.9 earthquake in China in 2008, killing 90,000 people.

Wednesday’s quake was followed by another 4.5-magnitude quake in Baoxing County, located under the city of Yan.

The state-run People’s Daily reported that four people were killed and 14 injured in the quake.

The state-run Xinhua News Agency, citing the earthquake relief headquarters in Yan City, said all the victims were reported from Baoxing County.

Ya’an has activated the second highest level of emergency response to the earthquake and is conducting damage assessments.

More than 800 emergency rescue personnel, armed police, fire department, medical sector and public security bureau were immediately dispatched to the quake-hit areas to search and rescue the wounded, repair roads and transport the affected residents.

The Ministry of Emergency Management said that a Level 3 National Emergency Response has been activated to conduct relief operations.

The ministry said a task force has been dispatched to guide and assist local emergency rescue efforts.

The ministry added that local firefighters have reached the epicenter, while quake rescue teams from Sichuan and other nearby areas are on standby for relief operations.
