Earthquake followed by nearly 20 aftershocks in Northern California: USGS

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake occurred just north of the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California at 4:57 a.m. local time on Tuesday, June 28, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Approximately 20 aftershocks less than 2.0 degrees occurred after the earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the earthquake.

The seismic event and the tremors that followed raised fears of a possible major earthquake waiting to occur in the region.

In fact, long-term seismic forecasts from the USGS indicated the possibility of a major earthquake before 2032.

The US Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was located two kilometers west-northwest of Cobb in Lake County, California.

Its depth was 0.5 km, which means that its intensity is not relatively strong compared to the deeper earthquakes under our planet.

Despite its mild impact, the earthquake was reported to be felt by dozens of people as far as Santa Rosa and Petaluma, as cited by The Sacramento Bee.

Aftershock swarm

Earthquakes occur along fault lines, which are broken down by different masses of rock. Slip on the fault makes it possible for the rocks to move and rub against each other.

The said movement between the rocks paves the way for earthquakes to occur, as well as the so-called lesser version of aftershocks and earthquake swarms.

Aftershocks are geological vibrations or seismic waves that typically occur after a major, identifiable earthquake.

They can vary in number and intensity depending on the strength of the main earthquake, as well as the location of the event.

According to the University of Southern California (USC), the slip is primarily caused by excessive stresses in the Earth’s outer layer that push the side of the fault together.

The sudden slip releases energy in the form of waves through the rocks that we feel as vibrations during earthquakes.

The biggest earthquakes in California

In the past 150 years, the state has experienced numerous earthquakes, some of which have caused widespread infrastructure damage, multiple deaths, and billions of dollars in economic damage, according to the California Department of State.

In 1857, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Fort Tejon, killing two people but leaving a 220-mile superficial scar.

In 1906, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in San Francisco killed 3,000 people and displaced 225,000.

Previous research has also shown that California is at risk of experiencing a giant earthquake in the future.

This is based on an increased probability of seismic data, indicating that the country is vulnerable to a potentially catastrophic geological event within the so-called San Andreas Fault.

Regardless, the prediction is not surprising since California lies within the seismically active region of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Pacific Ring of Fire

Tectonic plate movements are highly dynamic within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped region across the Pacific Ocean, which includes California and all adjacent regions and territories on the western coast of the Americas.

Within this region, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common, affecting countries in the Americas such as Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, and Colombia.

In Asia, the extension of the Ring of Fire reaches Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia and even New Zealand on the continent of Oceania.
