TEHRAN, Iran – At least five people were killed and dozens injured after at least three earthquakes with an initial magnitude of more than six on the Richter scale struck Hormozgan province in southern Iran.

Two of the strongest were recorded, with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, but the quake that caused all the casualties is believed to have been an initial 6.1 magnitude earthquake about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) below the surface and struck in the early hours of Saturday.

“All the victims were killed in the first earthquake and no one was hurt in the next two because people were already outside their homes,” the official IRNA news agency quoted local official Fouad Moradzadeh as saying.

At least 30 aftershocks were felt in villages and towns near Bandar Abbas, local officials said, adding that the neighboring United Arab Emirates were also felt.

The earthquakes pushed thousands of people into the streets, where they spent the rest of the night. Many people are still staying in the tents set up by local authorities and emergency services.

Yaqoub Soleimani, Secretary-General of the local Red Crescent relief service, told Iranian state media that the search and rescue operations had ended and no more casualties were expected.

He said setting up cooling systems for earthquake-affected people is a challenge as local temperatures reach 45 degrees Celsius.

Videos on social media and those broadcast on state television showed destroyed homes in several villages. Electricity was briefly cut off for dozens of villages.

Iran’s southern provinces have recently experienced several strong earthquakes, but losses and damages have been limited. State television said that 150 earthquakes and tremors hit West Hormozgan during the past month.

Two strong earthquakes hit an area near Qeshm Island near Bandar Abbas in November last year, killing one person.

In April last year, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit the city of Bushehr, where a major nuclear power plant is located, but it did not cause significant damage.

And in Iran’s southeastern Kerman province, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake killed more than 31,000 people and flattened the ancient city of Bam in 2003.
