Lake Wateree Dam sees regular inspections after earthquakes

Dams are inspected regularly and by several devices located in the water.

Kershaw County, South Carolina – Kershaw County has experienced more than sixty earthquakes since December, and the Lake Watery Dam is only several miles from where most of the earthquakes occur in Elgin.

Lake Wateree Dam consists of two components: an earthen dam created from rocks and mud and a concrete dam.

The presence of these dams near the epicenter of earthquakes makes many residents curious about the stability of the area.

“We have robust maintenance and inspection programs in place to ensure the integrity of those dams,” says Ben Williamson of Duke Energy.

Inspections are regular, Williamson says, but earth dams require more than concrete dams.

“There are two in Wateree, a concrete dam, and an earthen dam in Wateree, which we check every two weeks. We check our concrete dams every three months, but let me say that, when you have an example like what we saw in South Carolina recently, we can do inspections. Additional in two different situations — first, if we get two or more inches of water in a 24-hour period, and second, we’ll do an extra check if we have a perceptible seismic event, Williamson said.

The last inspection was last weekend.

“We’ve been checking Wateree constantly, doing visual inspections, well, these guys are in these embankments all the time, so they’re looking for anything that doesn’t look like it was before the event, well, they’ll look at things like leaks, they’ll look at monitors. The water level inside these dams that monitors, you know, the activity that’s going on inside to make sure nothing changes, we have an entire team dedicated simply to our dam structures and make sure they’re safe again, we’re regulated by federal agencies to keep these dams safe.” .

If more seismic events occur, Williamson said, they will continue to inspect the dam.
