Earthquake hits southern Iran, tremors felt by residents of Dubai

Residents in different parts of the United Arab Emirates, including Dubai, reported that they felt earthquakes after an earthquake hit Iran on Saturday.

The National Center of Meteorology said in a statement that while the quake was felt by residents, it “had no effect” in the UAE.

Iranian state media said that two strong earthquakes hit the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan on the Gulf, prompting the authorities to deploy search and rescue teams in the affected areas.

The earthquakes are reported to have a magnitude of 5.7 and 5.8 on the Richter scale. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.5.

We have not received any report of major damage yet. Mokhtar Salahshour, head of the Red Crescent in Hormozgan province, told state television that these earthquakes hit vast areas and assessment work is still going on.

Saturday’s tremor came after three earthquakes struck off the southern Iranian island of Kish on June 15, shaking Dubai and other areas across the Persian Gulf.

The US Geological Survey then said two quakes of 4.7 magnitude were followed by two of 5.3 quakes off the island near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Iran lies on large seismic faults and experiences an average of one earthquake per day.

In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people. A magnitude 7 earthquake struck western Iran in 2017, killing more than 600 people and injuring more than 9,000.
