The Timbers beat Earthquakes 2-1, extending the undefeated streak to 7

Portland, Oregon (AFP) Deeron Asprilla scored in the 71st minute to give Portland a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night, extending the Timbers’ unbeaten streak to seven.

Jaroslav Nezgoda also scored a goal to help Timbers improve to 4-0-3 since the start of June.

The Timbers are unbeaten in 16 consecutive games against the Earthquakes at Providence Park, outperforming San Jose 31-11.

Benjamin Kikanovic has scored for the Earthquakes, who have lost only two of their last six goals on the road.

The Timbers moved up to seventh and cut-off place in the Western Conference, a point above the Seattle Sounders.

“There was an understanding that we needed to be much better than we were at the start of the season,” Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese said of the current production line. And there was more emphasis on the details, to make sure that the guys were able to work more seriously on those details. I think once you start doing well, the belief grows and the competition within the team grows as well.”

Asprilla had some good chances early on, including an explosion that went away in the 14th minute. Portland goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic saved in the 27th minute with a Marcos Lopez header from a cross.

But the earthquakes broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute on Kikanovic’s close-range goal to take the lead in the break. The goal came after three consecutive yellow cards were awarded to the Portland players within three minutes.

Portland equalized in the 53rd minute when Yeme Chara’s shot from Nezgoda hit the goal. It was his fifth goal in his last five matches.

Asprilla finally broke through with a header past San Jose goalkeeper GT Marcinkowski. Asprilla celebrated with a leap back.

“When I have confidence, the work is easier for me,” Asbrella said.

Christian Espinosa almost equalized for San Jose, but his shot in the 89th minute hit the post.

“I think we did a very good first half. We got our chances to score here – it’s not easy,” San Jose interim coach Alex Covelo said.

Earthquakes are second to last in the west.

Portland was without Sebastian Blanco due to a yellow card accumulation.
