Magnitude 7.1 earthquake hits Philippines’ most populous island

A strong earthquake hit the Philippines’ largest and most populous island on Wednesday, prompting evacuations, causing landslides and damaging historic tourist sites.

The tremor struck 7.1 on the Richter scale (modified from 7) at a depth of 10 km and was recorded at 8.43 am Manila time. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said its source is in the Abra province in the northern part of the main island of Luzon. She added that aftershocks are expected.

In a press conference, Interior Minister Benjamin Abalus said that two people were killed in Benguet province, one in Abra province, and the other in another province. He said that at least sixty people were injured.
