Magnitude 5.3 earthquake hits Honduras, no injuries reported

Local media reported that a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Honduras on Tuesday morning, but caused no major damage or casualties.

The US Geological Survey announced, that the epicenter of the earthquake was about 38 km northeast of the coastal city of Tila near the Caribbean Sea and was at a depth of 10 km. A spokesman for the Honduran Firefighters Organization, Oscar Treminio, said they would continue to monitor the situation “and at the moment we have no reports of damage,” according to Reuters.

The earthquake did not cause a tsunami, and no one died as a result.

Honduras is a relatively poor country in Latin America with a population of 7 million that has suffered from deadly earthquakes that claimed many victims in the past. In 2008, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake killed five people and destroyed homes across the country, according to Reuters.

Among the victims were four children between the ages of 3 and 15 who died when the building they were sleeping in collapsed near the island of Roatan.

“They were all asleep. Most of them died in pieces,” Randolfo Funes, an official with the Honduran Civil Protection Agency at the time, told Reuters. Furthermore, the earthquake briefly triggered a tsunami alert across the Caribbean coast of Central America and caused infrastructure damage in the neighboring country of Guatemala.
