Ontario premier backs down after Trump blames Canada for wildfire smoke

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is firing back after President Donald Trump accused Canada of failing to properly manage its forests, calling it a “disgrace” that some U.S. officials are blaming Canada for wildfire smoke.

“They have very short memories. We had the water bombers, everyone was ready to go to California. That was last year. We sent hydroelectric linemen to the Carolinas and Georgia to help us. That’s what neighbors do, right?” Ford said at a news conference Saturday. “You don’t start threatening and criticizing because, guess what? One day it will be your turn, and we will be out there without hesitation supporting our neighbors, which is what we should be.”

Ford’s comments come after Trump accused Canada in an article published Friday on Truth Social of failing to properly manage its forests and brush, saying Canada should be held responsible for smoke billowing into the United States.

“Canada has refused to engage in basic forest management and debris removal, knowing that such refusal would lead to exactly this result. This is intentional neglect, and it is becoming an annual phenomenon, costing the United States billions of dollars, the cost of which of this pollution must necessarily be added to the TARIFFS that Canada currently pays,” the President said in his message.

Ongoing wildfires across Canada, as well as fires in northern Minnesota, have affected air quality in several states.

The same day as Trump’s post, Michigan’s Republican congressional delegation — Reps. Jack Bergman, John James, Bill Huizenga, Tom Barrett, Tim Walberg and Lisa McClain — sent a letter to Canadian Ambassador to the United States Mark Wiseman requesting a meeting to discuss wildfire prevention and ways to better protect residents from cross-border smoke.
