Two Americans killed, one missing as Iran attacks US base in Jordan
Two US service members were killed and a third is missing after Iranian ballistic missiles and drones struck an air base in Jordan used by US forces, US Central Command announced on July 18.
Four other U.S. service members were injured in the strikes on Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, known as MSAB. The injured were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have since been released, CENTCOM said. An unknown number of other personnel were also injured.
The soldiers were killed as U.S. and partner forces “defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks,” CENTCOM said. A video circulating on social media appeared to show ballistic missiles impacting the base.
The U.S. military is withholding further release of information pending notification of next of kin. Names are generally released 24 hours after families are notified.
Dozens of U.S. warplanes are based at MSAB, which has been a key hub for airstrikes against Iran.
The Trump administration has stepped up its air campaign against Iran after a shaky ceasefire failed last week. U.S. forces have attacked Iranian military installations, several bridges and other infrastructure over the past week, and Iran has launched missiles and drones at several bases used by the United States in the region, as well as at population centers in Gulf countries.
The United States carried out its eighth consecutive day of airstrikes following the Iranian strike on the Jordanian base. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the deadly attack “only strengthens our resolve.”
“These strikes are intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against U.S. service members in Jordan last night,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
At least 16 US service members have been killed in action since fighting with Iran began on February 28. At least nine have been killed in Iranian attacks. The other seven service members killed died in plane crashes: six airmen when a KC-135 collided with another tanker, and a Navy pilot lost at sea when his helicopter crashed. More than 400 soldiers have been injured since the start of the conflict.
