News of an earthquake near Ledwood Saturday morning | local news

An earthquake was reported on Saturday around 6 a.m., midway between Leadwood and Potosi, north of Interstate 8.

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was 1.9 magnitude and 6 km deep, or more than 3 miles in depth.

According to city-data.com, the Ledwood area’s historical earthquake activity is well above the Missouri average, and is 380% greater than the overall US average.

Five months ago, there was an earthquake 14 miles south of Frederictown, about one mile west of US 67 near Twelve Mile Creek. The 2.0-magnitude earthquake occurred on March 7 and was 9.6 km or 6 miles deep.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, in the past 25 years, scientists have learned that strong earthquakes in the central Mississippi Valley are not strange events but have occurred repeatedly in the geological past.

“Geological studies indicate that major earthquakes occurred in the southeastern Missouri area around AD 300, 900 and 1400,” according to the DNR website. “Lesser earthquakes of magnitude 4.6 or less occurred in 1990, 1992, 1998, and 2003 in areas ranging from central Missouri to Bothell in southeastern Missouri.”
