A man dies in a powerful earthquake that toppled a building in Taiwan | Taiwan
At least one person was killed after a strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan, toppling a three-story building, temporarily trapping four people inside, leaving about 400 tourists stranded on a mountain and derailed on part of a train.
The 6.9-magnitude quake was the largest of more than 75 earthquakes that rocked the island’s southeast coast between Saturday evening, when a 6.4-magnitude quake struck the same area, and Sunday afternoon.
Most of the damage appears to have been north of the epicenter in the town of Qichang, in the north of Taitung County, at a relatively shallow depth of four miles (6 kilometres).
Taiwan’s state media, the Central News Agency, said a man with the surname Huang died in a factory in Hualien when a piece of machinery fell on him.
The central news agency said a three-story building that had a 7-Eleven store on the ground floor and residences on the upper floor collapsed in the nearby town of Yuli in Hualien. The 70-year-old owner and his wife were rescued first, but it took longer to reach the 39-year-old woman and her five-year-old daughter.
A photo released by the Hualien city government showed the girl lying on a blanket and orange-uniformed rescue workers handing a metal ladder from the wreckage.

The top two floors of the building were left scattered across a small street, with electrical wires pulled down by the fallen structure.
More than 7,000 families were reported to have cut off electricity in Yuli and water pipes were damaged.
Police and firefighters rushed to the collapse of a bridge on a two-lane road in what appeared to be a rural area of the town, where three people and one or more cars may have fallen, according to media reports.

Also in Yuli, the agency said a landslide trapped nearly 400 tourists on a mountain known for its orange daylilies that cover its slopes at this time of year. They had no electricity and a weak mobile signal.
Debris from a falling umbrella on a platform at Dongli railway station in Fuli – between Yuli and the earthquake epicenter in Qichang – hit a passing train, derailing six cars, state media reported, citing the railway administration. None of the 20 passengers were injured.
Taiwan residents shared screenshots of the earthquake’s impact on social media.
One of the videos showed a couple trapped on a bridge in a rural area, with the road collapsing in front and behind them. CCTV footage also showed the moment a roof collapsed on the indoor badminton court, forcing the players to run for cover.
The two largest earthquakes – Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon – as well as several aftershocks were felt at the northern tip of the island in the capital, Taipei. In Taoyuan City, west of Taipei and 130 miles north of the epicenter, a man was injured when a roof collapsed on the fifth floor of a sports center.
Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, urged people to be vigilant for more aftershocks, but said the government was “in control of the situation.”
Earthquakes are common in Taiwan, due to their proximity to the edges of the Eurasian and Philippine tectonic plates.
The most disastrous earthquake in modern history occurred in 1999, when more than 2,400 people were killed and 11,000 others injured in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Nantou County.
The USGS initially gave a higher reading for Sunday’s quake than local authorities, initially having a magnitude of 7.2 before lowering it to 6.9.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for several southern Japanese islands near Taiwan, but they later withdrew.
