Locals worry about their loved ones after the devastating earthquake in Mexico

SALT LAKE CITY – In the wake of the massive earthquake that killed at least one person in Mexico this week, many in Utah are concerned about family members still living in the country.

“They’re fine, thank God, but they’ve been through a lot,” said Rossio Mejia.

Mejia has lived in Utah for about three decades, but her family still lives in Mexico. Most of her relatives are in Michoacan state, which was near the epicenter.

“They are afraid, and of course feel the earthquake, they ran out of their homes and started calling each other and saw the buildings in the city center crumbling, and many houses were also damaged by the earthquake,” Mejia added.

According to the US Geological Survey, in addition to the Mexico earthquake, there were other earthquakes of between 4.5 and 5.8 degrees in the region.

Mejia adds that it is difficult to be away from home and loved ones, especially in these terrifying times..

“I want to stay with them, I want to be with them, but I call them and I feel some relief when I talk to them and they cry, I cry, it’s a moral help,” Mejia added.

The Mexican Consulate in Salt Lake City said it is grateful for the community’s awareness and support during these difficult times, and they are grateful to the people who are helping.

But community leaders add that if residents donate to help, it is important to be vigilant and donate to legitimate sources.

“One of the best things you can do is send money directly to family members, or through an organization,” said Brandi Farmer, President and CEO, Centro Civico Mexicano. “Check it out. Find the organization using Google and find out if it is a non-profit. Better to go through a bank or through an already established organization like the Red Cross.”

Mejia adds that she hopes more people will be able to donate and find ways to help those in need in Mexico.

“It is very important because a lot of people don’t have jobs, they don’t even have anything to eat. So I am really asking for community support to help them.”
