Prime Minister visits Ukraine in final week of term

Prime Minister Kiir Starmer is scheduled to visit Kiev in his final week in office and hold talks with President Zelenskyy. The leaders will discuss how the foundations established under his government, including the establishment of a coalition of the willing, will pave the way for lasting peace. In the face of increasingly reckless Russian attacks in recent weeks, the Prime Minister will pay tribute to the sacrifice and courage of the Ukrainian people and say Britain’s “firm support for Ukraine will always remain”.

The Prime Minister will visit Kiev today (Thursday 16 July) to mark the culmination of two years of leadership supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom and sovereignty.

The Prime Minister is expected to meet with President Zelenskyy to discuss progress to date in helping Ukraine fight Putin’s illegal invasion and where allies should focus to ensure Ukraine has what it needs.

Keir Starmer, who has played a pivotal role in building the international coalition, military support and long-term security partnerships that have put Ukraine firmly on the path to peace, will tell President Zelenskyy that Britain’s support for Ukraine remains steadfast.

He will explain how the work carried out by the UK and its allies over the past two years has helped Ukraine defeat Russian aggression and secure lasting peace.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister attended the Coalition of the Will conference in Paris where he announced that Britain had signed a deal to participate in 78 billion pounds (90 billion euros) of Ukraine-backed loans, strengthening Ukraine’s defense and signing future contracts with British defense companies.

The plan will strengthen Ukraine’s defense investment over 2026 and 2027 and include the procurement of defense products for which British industry already has world-leading expertise.

The deal between the UK and EU will give UK defense companies access to procurement contracts financed by loans, unlocking billions of dollars in potential investment. The UK government will contribute to the borrowing costs of loans on contracts secured by UK companies.

Britain and its allies have also launched a new plan to build a shared program to protect Europe from ballistic missiles, leveraging what Ukraine has learned from more than four years of fighting full-scale Russian aggression to prepare Europe to defend itself against the growing threat.

In response to Russia’s continued offensive, Britain has already continued to increase its defense spending to the largest extent since the Cold War. The Prime Minister doubled down on this commitment when he announced his defense investment plan, announcing a further £15 billion of investment.

The Prime Minister will tell President Zelenskyy that although his term is coming to an end, Britain’s commitment to Ukraine is not. The partnerships, coalitions and support built over the past two years are designed to last for years to come.
