BEIJING – A man who had been missing for 17 days after an earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan Province has been found alive, according to local media reports.
Gan Yu, a 28-year-old hydropower station employee, stayed with his colleague Lu Yong after the 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Sichuan on Sept. 5. The earthquake killed 93 people and injured hundreds.
Jean provided first aid to his colleagues and helped prevent flooding by releasing water from the dam, according to state-owned China National Radio. Gan and Luo then stayed at the station for more than a day without food or mobile phone signal.
The duo attempted to leave on September 7, walking more than 12 miles. Local media reported that Jean, who is nearsighted, lost his glasses and was having difficulties navigating the mountainous terrain.
The couple eventually decided to separate, as Lu went to find help and Gan stayed with some wild fruits and bamboo shoots for sustenance while he waited for help.
Rescuers found Lu on September 8, but when they returned to where Gan had left, he was no longer there. Rescuers found discarded clothing and footprints, and they feared Gann had succumbed to hypothermia.
However, Gann was discovered by a local farmer who decided to join the hunt on Wednesday because he was familiar with the mountains. Nie Taigao heard Gan’s faint cries after two hours of searching and saw a wounded man under some trees.
It was not clear why Jan left the waiting area. According to the state-owned news website China Daily, Gan said he survived a 17-day ordeal by eating wild fruits and drinking water.
He was flown to a nearby hospital and doctors determined he had several broken bones.
Footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed Gann eating a snack and being rescued, as well as being reunited with his parents from his hospital bed.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
