Director-General of WHO and the Minister-President of Wallonia, Belgium, sign the Framework Agreement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly
On September 21, on the pages of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, a new framework agreement was signed between the Government of Wallonia, Belgium and the World Health Organization.
The Minister-President of Wallonia, Belgium, Mr. Elio Di Rupo met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization to further expand the strategic partnership between Wallonia and the World Health Organization. The framework agreement will, among other things, facilitate financial contributions to the work of the WHO, with a focus on technical cooperation on health problems in priority countries in Africa that are at the heart of the Walloon government’s development cooperation efforts.
With the new agreement, it is expected that joint cooperation on areas of mutual interest, which include immunization, research and policy initiatives, could begin as soon as possible.
dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “WHO is very grateful to have the technical and financial support of Wallonia and we look forward to our collaboration, working together to put programs and policies in place that can improve the health and lives of the people who need it most.”
Mr. Elio Di Rupo said: “The signing of this framework agreement is the first step in a new collaboration between Wallonia and the WHO. Talks between the two parties will continue in the coming months to implement the goals set out in this agreement through joint action programs.”
The agreement is focused on certain areas where the added value of the partnership will have the greatest effect. For this purpose, joint action programs will be developed to support the implementation of public health programs and activities aimed at strengthening health systems in Africa. These programs envisage work on fairness and vaccine research, as well as the establishment of health policy in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Other key areas of focus include supporting the Partnership for Universal Health Insurance.
