8 earthquakes in 10 days Gault Sumatra; BMKG explains

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has recorded at least eight earthquakes on the island of Sumatra during the past 10 days. Five of them took place in West Sumatra, and four of them are in Bukittinggi.

The latest earthquake of magnitude 2.7 was measured and located 11 km southwest of Besawaran, Lampung on Monday 26th September 2022. Coming from 12 km depth, this weak earthquake can still be felt at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Level II.

“Seismic activity in the Cyanoc sector of the Sumatra Fault is on the rise,” said acting chief of the agency’s Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, when contacted on Monday, September 26, 2022.

Another section indicates an increase in seismic activity from the Sumatra Fault, also known as the Simangku Fault, the Tripa section that has caused two earthquakes in Takengon, Central Aceh, in the past 10 days.

BMKG data showed that earthquakes caused by the activity of this segment caused stronger shocks up to the fourth level of the MMI. “It has been a long time since an earthquake was recorded there. The last earthquake with a magnitude of 7 occurred in 1935,” Dariono said.

The agency is closely monitoring the increase in seismic activity in the two regions, along with others. However, no early warning was issued due to the high degree of uncertainty in such events.

“Small earthquakes can be a sign of a larger or stronger earthquake, but there are also cases that just go away,” Dariono explained.

On September 16 in Bukittinggi, MMI Level II-III

The M2.9 earthquake occurred at 23:54 WEST. The epicenter was recorded 7 km southwest of Bukittinggi and at a depth of 10 km.

On September 18 in Bukittinggi, MMI Level II-III

The M3.5 earthquake occurred at 13:46 GMT SW Indonesia. The epicenter was recorded 5 km southwest of Bukittinggi and at a depth of 10 km.

September 19 – Takengon, Central Aceh – MMI Level Two and Three

The M4.5 earthquake occurred at 10:44 WIB. The epicenter was recorded 35 km southwest of Takungun, at a depth of 3 km.

September 23 – Takengon, Central Aceh – MMI . Level 4

The M5.1 earthquake occurred at 02:36 WEST. The epicenter was recorded at 34 km southwest of Takungun, at a depth of 10 km.

On September 23 – Padang – MMI Level II-III

The M3.7 earthquake occurred at 11:30 WIB. The epicenter was recorded 20 km southwest of Pariaman, at a depth of 67 km.

On September 25th – Bukittinggi – MMI Level 2 & 3

The M2.9 earthquake occurred at 20:30 WIB. The epicenter was recorded at 9 km northwest of Bukittinggi and at a depth of 10 km.

On September 25th – Bukittinggi – MMI Level 2 & 3

The M2.9 earthquake occurred at 21:23 WEST. The epicenter was recorded 5 km northeast of Bukittinggi and at a depth of 10 km.

On September 26th – Pesawaran – MMI Level Two

The M2.7 earthquake occurred at 06:36 WIB. The epicenter was recorded 11 km southwest of Besawaran and at a depth of 6 km.
