In a miracle of survival, a man was injured in an earthquake and lived alone for 17 days in the wild, surviving on fruit while suffering a broken leg and broken ribs.

Now, he may be discharged from the hospital this week after days of treatment in the intensive care ward.

Gan Yu, a 28-year-old hydropower plant employee in Luoding County, Sichuan Province, went missing after the county’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake on September 5. During his ordeal, he lost about 20 kilograms, but it is expected that he will soon be. fully recovered.

Jean was found alive on September 21, and was taken to the West China Hospital of Sichuan University.

Lying on a hospital bed and wearing glasses, Gan seems to be thinking clearly, smiling and speaking softly to visitors. Were it not for the bandages on his body, one could hardly imagine that he had just survived a horrific shock.

After the earthquake, Gan and his 41-year-old colleague Luo Yong cleared the debris at the Wandong Hydropower Plant to rescue another worker. They also opened the flood gates in time to avoid a disaster that would have washed away farmlands and homes.

But things went wrong for Gan: he lost his glasses and couldn’t see very well.

At the direction of Luo, he walked 20 or 30 kilometers from the station. But he became too weak to go any further and decided to stay put and wait for Lou to return with the rescuers. Lu was found on September 8, but rescuers were unable to find Jean.

Gan feared that Lu would die, so he decided to go back to the station to wait for help.

Without his glasses, he fell and got up several times. He didn’t know the time because he also lost his cell phone and didn’t have a watch. When it got dark, he lay on the ground and slept intermittently.

“I didn’t walk at night and stayed under the trees,” Gan said. “My leg was hit by a stone fall, and I could only walk slowly during the day.”

For the first few days, he was able to find a stream to drink water. Later, he could only collect rainwater from the algae. Eat wild kiwi fruit in the jungle.

When wild fruit and algae were no longer available, he dug up his roots and drank his own urine to stay alive. Gann said that often he could clearly hear the sound of a helicopter.

He described his desperate thoughts: “I can’t give up. My family is waiting for me and people must look for me, I want to live. The voice of the mother, the childhood companions, the grinning grandmother’s face kept shining in my mind. When I was on the verge of despair, I spoke to the grass and the trees,” said Gan .

His salvation came on September 21, when Ni Taigao, a 58-year-old Yi ethnic villager in Shimian County, heard his calls for help on a mountain slope.

He had lost 20 kilograms in this ordeal, but his condition is stable. Initial examination revealed multiple soft tissue bruises, rib and leg fractures, and a serious infection transmitted by staying in the wild for nine rainy days.

With his condition improving, he was moved from the intensive care unit to a general ward on Sunday and could be discharged from hospital this week, according to his mother, Chen Weishu.
