Deep in the Nevada desert is a pool of water that can turn an earthquake into a tsunami from thousands of kilometers away.

(Well, a very small tsunami.)

When a 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico last week, it sent waves 1.2 meters high in Devils Hole, a cavernous pond on the outskirts of Death Valley National Park.

The stand-alone “desert tsunami” occurred five minutes after the earthquake that hit the Mexican states of Colima and Michoacan at 11:05 a.m. PST – but 2,500 kilometers away.

This wave is technically called a seiche – a standing wave in a closed body of water.

The pool allergy didn’t surprise National Park Service officials. They learned that Devils Hole serves as an “unusual indicator of worldwide seismic activity”.

Large earthquakes in Japan, Indonesia and Chile caused the pool to slide like water in a bathtub, with waves splashing up to two metres.

Not just any earthquake

However, Devils Hole will not only record any earthquake. A 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the southwestern coast of Mexico three days after the previous earthquake near the same epicenter. But aquatic ecologist Kevin Wilson told the Los Angeles Times he didn’t create any waves at Devil’s Hole.

“It depends on depth, size and location around the world,” Wilson said. He added that most earthquakes along the Pacific Ring of Fire at or above 7 degrees will be recorded in Devils Hole.

What effect did these earthquakes have on the partially filled cavern? Located in Nye County, Nevada, Devils Hole is the only habitat of the critically endangered Devils Hole pupfish. Only 175 survived.

Tsunamis can hurt these small fish, which depend on algae that grows on a shallow, sunlit shelf in the cave. These waves move sediment and rock on the shallow shelf of Devils Pit, and can wash algae away.

However, wildlife officials aren’t too concerned – the fish have survived such disturbances before. “We didn’t find any dead fish after the waves stopped,” Wilson said.
