NYT: Trump backtracks on authorized military strikes against Iran

President Donald Trump abruptly called off military strikes against Iran after earlier agreeing to strikes in retaliation for Iran’s downing of a U.S. military drone, The New York Times reported. The operation was already in its initial stages — ships were in position and planes were in the air — but no missile had been ordered to be fired, a senior administration official told the Times. The strike had been planned for before dawn in Iran in order to minimize the risk to civilians and the Iranian military, and the military received word shortly afterwards that the strike had been called off, at least temporarily. The U.S. remains at war with Iran, with U.S. military or diplomatic responses likely to trigger further escalation from Tehran.
