Earthquake and tsunami set for Thursday MyClallamCounty.com

PORT ANGELES – Thursday marks the last “Great Washington Tremor” earthquake drill in the state.

And this year, there is an additional focus on tsunami preparedness.

At 10:20 a.m. Thursday, the tsunami sirens and emergency alerts will go off. Residents and businesses are encouraged to use the drills to practice dropping, covering and waiting in the event of an earthquake, then making sure they know what to do to evacuate in the event of a tsunami.

They will have pedestrians on the tsunami route this year as part of the drill, Justin Corley of Clamam County Emergency Management says.

“We’re going to have people in bright, you know, reflective jackets walking around downtown Port Angeles, Seikou, and Three Crabs. The point of the walk is to walk down the tsunami path and look for any problems along the way. Also look for the signs to make sure that the signs are Clear. It will be in real time. In fact, they will wait for the tsunami sirens to go off and then they will start their walk and the time from when the sirens go off,” Corley said.
