Vancouver Islanders feel the shaking from a 4.8-magnitude earthquake near Tofino

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake on Vancouver Island Friday night was strong enough to shock shelves and cause some anxiety among residents.

John Cassidy, a Canadian Natural Resources seismologist, said the quake occurred offshore, about 35 kilometers northwest of Tofino, at a depth of 32 kilometers.

There were no reports of damage, but more than 250 people reported to Earthquake Canada that they felt the tremor.

It was large enough to be felt over a very wide area, including Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver, and even Seattle, Cassidy said.

The ocean plate at Juan de Fuca is about 30 kilometers below the surface in this area, he said, and earthquakes that strike here tend to have very few or no aftershocks.

“So in this case there were no aftershocks because it was one of these deeper earthquakes,” Cassidy said.

Cassidy said there’s no reason to believe this quake signals a larger earthquake to come, but he said it’s a good reminder that the British Columbia coast is on a fault line.

“We always have the potential for a major earthquake in the area. So it’s important to be prepared to anticipate and project, seek cover and hang on if you feel the shaking.”

Mid Island-Pacific MLA Rim Josie Osborne tweeted that her whole house was shaking.

Friday’s quake followed a smaller quake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale that registered 288 kilometers off the coast of Tofino shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday.
