The Cobalt reopens after a five-year closure for earthquake updates

One of Vancouver’s favorite music venues reopens this month after a five-year closure due to renovations.

Cobalt opens the doors again on Friday, December 16th after it was required to close in 2018 for seismic upgrades. Located on Main and Former Streets next to Boxcar Social and Pizzeria Farina, it was a nightlife staple on the border of Mount Pleasant and Chinatown.

“The hope has always been for a reopening, but it is up to the owners to do the work to get the room ready to code,” a spokesperson told the Daily Hive. “This only became a reality a few months ago when the building was transformed and the work was finally completed.”

The building was recently sold to RBI Building, which has completed upgrades to make the space earthquake-safe—which is why the City of Vancouver ordered it closed five years ago.

The venue seats 250 people and will soon be back hosting Monday night karaoke parties and weekly live art nights.

At the big welcome party on December 16, headliner Vicious Cycles welcomes to the stage along with Little Destroyer and Rempel & the R Pants. Janky Bungag and Peter Press Lee also play on Saturday, and GDBC and SUUNS are gearing up for the new year.

The venue has a new ownership and management group, details on which will be announced in the next few weeks. Promoters in place are also working to confirm shows for the coming months.

People on social media are already welcoming The Cobalt back, with one Instagram user calling it a “f*cking Christmas miracle.”
