NASA Renews CWU Earthquake Research Grant | News

ELLENSBURG, WA. Earthquake detection and characterization has been the central focus of the Northwest Pacific Geodetic Matrix Laboratory (PANGA) at the University of Central Washington for more than 25 years. The latest grant from NASA will ensure that the life-saving laboratory continues to work for at least another year.

The financing package of $ 225,908 – the second of the three annual installments – will help Banga develop a global center for analyzing the global satellite navigation system in real time. The facility will enable earth scientists and seismic and tsunami early warning systems in the United States to track and analyze seismic activity from around the world – and its often tsunami – using GPS technology.

As the Director of Melbourne PANGA explained, if the laboratory can distinguish the earthquake’s location, magnitude and deformed associated ground quickly enough, emergency personnel can notify residents about strong earthquake activity before it arrives, giving them more time to prepare. When tracking a tsunami, GPS helps provide early alerts so that coastal community residents can evacuate before the flood begins.

“We believe these early warnings will help save lives,” said Melbourne, professor of geosciences at CWU. “Current seismic and tsunami warning centers struggle to accurately characterize large earthquakes using seismometers only, which often require 15 minutes or more to obtain an accurate size. With GPS, it usually takes only 20 or 30 seconds to measure its size.”

Melbourne said the most important difference between the use of GPS and seismometers in tracking seismic activity is that GPS can determine the magnitude of the earthquake more accurately in a shorter period of time. The size of the tremor determines how widely the shaky alerts and tsunami warnings are sent. Banga’s research has shown that introducing GPS in early warning systems can lead to more accurate warnings and fewer victims.

One of PANGA’s recent successes was the detection of a 7.1-magnitude earthquake last July in Riverside, California when scientists were able to measure the Earth’s deformation of the Eastern Mojave Desert within 25 seconds – all from the CWU campus in Ellensburg.
