“Nightmare”: Suffering from the effects of the earthquakes in Venezuela | Earthquake news

CARACAS, Venezuela – A week after twin earthquakes struck Venezuela, the country is only beginning to process the tragedy.

As of Friday, 2,645 people had been confirmed dead after two consecutive earthquakes occurred less than a minute apart on June 24, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 respectively.

The roads are cracked. Buildings were brought down. Thousands of lives were changed forever.

With up to 38,500 people missing, the death toll is expected to rise further. The Venezuelan government has reportedly requested 10,000 bags to store bodies, according to the United Nations.

But the search is not over yet, as international rescue teams make their way through mountains of rubble, driven by the ever-present hope of finding survivors.

The rescuers were joined by local volunteers armed with hammers, picks and shovels. Many work late at night.

In the coastal city of La Guaira, one of the most affected areas, dozens of high-rise residential buildings were reduced to rubble. The Caribbean breeze wafts the pungent smell of decaying corpses through the city, while vultures soar overhead.

Residents line the streets and anxiously watch the search efforts. Some pray for a miracle. Others hope, at least, that they will have the opportunity to bury their loved ones.

With thousands unable to return to their homes, parks and public squares have been turned into makeshift tent villages.

Sadness among the displaced turned to anger, as some residents accused the government of building shoddy public housing and failing to implement safety standards.

They also accuse Venezuela’s United Socialist Party, which has ruled the country for more than a quarter of a century, of building a corrupt system that has failed to provide the basic public services needed to deal with a crisis of this magnitude.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez defended the government’s response, denying that it could have acted faster.

Survivors spoke to Al Jazeera about their experiences during the tragedy, how they felt about the government’s response and how they coped in the days that followed.
