More than 29,000 people died in Syria and Turkey as a result of Monday’s earthquakes.

The United Nations says about 800,000 people in the area are in urgent need of hot meals. Relief efforts across Turkey and Syria remain slow and constantly hampered by the freezing conditions.

Speaking to reporters, the UN aid chief, Martin Griffiths, said there was an urgent need for medical assistance, food and shelter for the survivors.

“I think it is difficult to make an accurate estimate because we need to stay under the rubble, but I am sure it will double or increase,” he said. “We haven’t really started counting the dead.”

Mr. Griffiths also said that the UN will work to open more border crossings from Turkey into northwest Syria.

Two earthquakes on Monday killed more than 29,000 people and injured 98,000 in one of the deadliest disasters in the region in more than 100 years.

According to the World Health Organization, about 26 million people were affected by the disaster. Anger over the destruction of many tall buildings has prompted officials in Turkey to issue more than 100 arrest warrants in connection with the building’s construction.

At least ten people have been arrested, including building contractors and developers.
