Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that his government will crack down on those involved in looting or breaking the law in the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck the country earlier this week.
Erdogan said that in the aftermath of the total destruction and chaos caused by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the circulation of reports of looting of shops and damaged buildings in Turkey has increased the country’s security concerns.
“We have declared a state of emergency,” the prime minister said during a visit to the affected area, according to Reuters. “This means that from now on, people involved in looting or kidnapping must know that the firm hand of the state is on their back.”
However, it is not clear which kidnappings Erdogan was alluding to.
On the same day, the Austrian Army’s relief unit, German rescue teams, and other search and rescue workers temporarily halted search operations, citing similar concerns about factional violence, scarcity of supplies, and hygiene issues. An army spokesperson said their operations faced an “increasingly difficult security situation”, according to BBC News.
Unverified videos circulating on social media show scenes of looting, hijacking of aid convoys and alleged looting as they are being beaten by the authorities and angry mobs.

“People were breaking windows and fences of shops and cars,” a man looking for a colleague in a collapsed building in the southern city of Antakya told Reuters.
Turkish security authorities have arrested at least 98 people for allegedly exploiting the destruction, anonymous sources told the state-run Anadolu Agency. They reportedly confiscated $11,000 and other stolen items such as cell phones, laptops, and jewelry.
“We are guarding our homes and cars. Thieves are looting our homes. Unfortunately there is nothing left to say. We are destroyed, we are shaken. What we went through is a nightmare,” said Aylin, a resident of Hatay. Capasakal, per AFP.

However, food and water supplies are becoming increasingly scarce, and many people are in dire need of essentials.
“There is a phone shop near me where all the phones were stolen,” shopkeeper Nizamuddin Bilmes told Euronews.
“Supermarkets are fine,” Bilmes said. “If people come to get nappies and food and drinks, it’s normal because help hasn’t arrived for a day or two. But some people are weird, they come to get a cooker or a coffee maker.” .
In a report by The Guardian, those who have taken refuge in Gokson – a town 70 miles from the epicenter – are so worried about a lack of supplies as desperate people “searched for food” among the rubble.
Monday’s earthquake destroyed more than 6,000 buildings in Turkey, and the total death toll in both Syria and Turkey passed 28,000 this weekend.
