Turkey Fines Broadcasters for Critical Coverage of Earthquake Response | turkey
Criticizing the decision, a member of its board of directors nominated by the opposition said that the Turkish media regulator imposed a fine on three broadcasters because of their coverage of the earthquake that struck the south of the country, killing more than 42,000 people.
Halk TV, Tele 1 and FOX have all been handed fines, calculated on the basis of their revenue for the previous month, for reporting shortcomings in the government’s response to the earthquake.
All three channels are known for their editorial lines critical of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Halk TV is closely allied with the Republican People’s Party, Turkey’s main opposition.
Erdogan unleashed a sweeping crackdown after a failed coup in 2016 that brought much of the media under the control of the government and its business allies.
He will seek re-election this year, and his administration’s handling of the quake has become a major battleground. Many destitute families criticized the government for failing to reach them and rescue their loved ones from the rubble.
The main opposition leader, who rivals Erdogan in opinion polls, has topped the criticism.
In October, Turkey passed a law that punishes spreading “false news” with up to three years in prison.
According to Reporters Without Borders, Turkey is ranked 149 out of 180 in press freedom in 2022.
Halk TV and Tele 1 were fined 5% of revenue for the month of January, said Ilhan Tasci, a board member nominated by the opposition parties.
They were also ordered to suspend one of their daily programs for five days.
He added that Halk TV and FOX TV were also fined 3% of their sales in January for separate violations.
“All of these sanctions were based on post-earthquake comments and news,” he wrote.
“We live in a time when reporting is a crime.”
The head of the Journalists Syndicate in Turkey, Nazmi Bilgin, described the decisions as a “crime” against viewers and described the organizing body as a “censorship board”.
With these penalties, the members of the criminals [the regulator]Whoever ignores the public’s right to receive news and the right of earthquake victims to be informed, is committing a major crime.”
Tele 1 editor-in-chief Merdan Yanardag called the sanctions “a complete disgrace”.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
