A Virginia woman raises money for Peru earthquake victims – NBC4 Washington

At least 15 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured after a powerful earthquake struck Ecuador and Peru on Saturday. As rescue efforts there intensify, a group congregates at the DMV to raise money to help the victims.

The devastating scenes are heartbreaking to watch as Izolina Campos, 84, who is doing everything she can to help her country.

“My heart was constricting,” she said, “I don’t know what to do.” “I don’t know if I can go to Peru and do something there. But, I can do more here than I do there.”

Campos helped organize the annual Peruvian Festival in Northern Virginia for years. Now, she’s teamed up with the Maryland-Piura Sister States Committee to raise money for those in need.

But it is not the earthquake alone that Peruvians deal with. The country had barely begun to recover from a powerful hurricane that swept through cities and destroyed homes.

“The Peruvian coast has been damaged, and everyone needs our help,” said Campos.

She said their main focus is on raising money to buy clean water and mosquito repellents while the country recovers from both natural disasters.

“We’re begging people to please help us,” Campos said. “We need help. It’s not for us, it’s for them.”

She hopes people will sympathize with what her country is going through. For now, the focus is on fundraising, but in the future, Campos said she plans to collect clothes and supplies that they can ship to Peru.

“I’ve lived here 54 years,” she said, “but my heart is still half and half, half of it in Peru and the other half here.” “But my heart is now more in Peru because they need it. They need us.”
