A 4.0-magnitude earthquake strikes central Oklahoma

A 4.0-magnitude earthquake was among a series of six tremors that struck central Oklahoma Thursday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

No injuries or major damage were reported in the aftermath of the quakes, which also included a 3.3-magnitude earthquake and began early Thursday near the town of Carney, about 40 miles northeast of Oklahoma City.

Other quakes ranged in magnitude from 1.6 to 2.3, according to the USGS.

“I know the quake was definitely felt here because I got a lot of phone calls early this morning,” said spokeswoman Dawn Jones of Stillwater, about 25 miles northeast of the epicenter.

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported Thursday morning in central Oklahoma.

Jones said no damage or injuries were reported in the city, or on the Oklahoma State University campus, according to Oklahoma State University spokesperson Shannon Rigsby.

Thousands of earthquakes of varying magnitude have been recorded in Oklahoma over the past decade and have been linked to oil and gas production, particularly underground injection of wastewater, a by-product of oil and gas production.

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission, which regulates the state’s oil and gas industry, is sending inspectors to investigate 15 injection wells, according to spokesman Matt Skinner.

“We’ve identified wells that might be suspicious and will check them” for both the volume of wastewater being injected and the pressure used to inject the fluid, Skinner said.

The authority had previously directed oil and gas producers to close some injection wells and reduce volumes in others to reduce the chance of earthquakes.
