A new pipeline could protect Alameda’s water supply in the event of an earthquake

Alameda, Calif. (KRON) — In Alameda, the East Bay Mud Company is installing a massive new water pipeline that engineers say will withstand the next big earthquake. He will replace an 80-year-old pipe official who fears he will fail in a big shaker.

As it stands now, a major earthquake could have devastating effects on the city of Alameda’s water resources. This is why the more than half a mile long high-density water pipeline runs underground.

It replaces the existing eight-decade-old pipe that brings water from Auckland to the island.

The area is prone to earthquakes, says Jimmy Yolloy, director of engineering and construction for the East Bay Municipal District.

“Alameda is an island. There is no storage and no water storage on Alameda Island. “All of Alameda’s water comes from reservoirs in Oakland and Berkeley. This is important. If existing pipelines, which are prone to failure during an earthquake, break, Alameda will be out of water.”

Yoloy says the new pipe – 32 inches in diameter – will be fitted through a well drilled under Auckland’s Inner Port. This phase of the project will be completed at the end of this week.

By the end of the year, it will be connected to existing water networks across the estuary.

“This is an important project for us,” Yoloy said. “We believe it is essential to replace our aging infrastructure to maintain the resilience of our water system, as well as to promote sustainability for the future.”

This includes preserving the underground pipe, which East Bay Mud hopes to repurpose into a recycled water line.

“Recycled water provides us with the opportunity to have a kind of drought-resistant supply,” said spokeswoman Andrea Bock. “And so, we’ll look at that as a possibility to serve Alameda.”

East Bay Mud says customers should not experience any service interruptions.
