Ridgecrest faults increasingly sensitive to solid-earth tides before earthquakes – ScienceDaily

Researchers reported at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Seismological Society (SSA) that faults in the Ridgecrest, California area were highly sensitive to solid ground tidal stresses in the year and a half prior to the July 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence.

“The signal of tidal modulation becomes very strong” after 2018, said Eric Buss of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, noting that the signal was determined by seismicity around faults triggered by the 2019 magnitude 7.1 earthquake.

The correlation does not mean that tidal stresses – which are very small compared to other tectonic stresses – caused the earthquake.

“We don’t know if something started to happen in the fault zone, which is an indication of the next earthquake,” said Boss. “This process may have changed the properties of the crust in a way that made the crust more sensitive to tidal stresses.”

The solid Earth also deforms in the same cyclical fashion, due to being pulled by the same gravitational forces of the Sun and Moon that create ocean tides. People do not feel the changes, but the Earth deforms 10-20 cm per day.

These hard tides, Beus explains, “induce very, very small pressure changes in the crust, which can induce stress changes in all the faults within the crust.”

Although researchers have known about these small changes in stress for more than a century, it has been difficult to extract their signals from the seismic record, and determine whether they modulate earthquakes.

In the past 10 years, Bose said, better earthquake detection and analysis technologies have made it possible to search earthquake catalogs to find the signal of tidal stresses.

He and his colleagues built a rich, high-resolution earthquake catalog, using machine learning algorithms along with other techniques, of the past decade of accurate earthquakes in the Ridgecrest region. (Microquakes usually refer to earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 or smaller.)

They found that “there is suggestive evidence that peaks in seismic activity occur when tidal stresses are maximum,” Bose said, “but this modification is weak, and because it is weak, it is only suggested.”

Other researchers in the 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Tohoku massive earthquakes detected an increase in seismic modulation associated with tidal stresses, decades before the earthquakes, Bose said. Some scientists have been able to achieve similar results in earthquake experiments created in a lab.

The tidal results have no direct implications for earthquake prediction, Buss said, “because we don’t know if we’re looking at a general phenomenon or just a Ridgecrest earthquake-specific phenomenon,” but I see it as a way to get new observations.
