This report was prepared by the OCHA Turkey mission in cooperation with humanitarian partners and covers the humanitarian situation and the earthquake response in Turkey. It covers the period from 14 to 20 April 2023.

Highlights

Challenging weather conditions, including heavy rains, floods and strong winds as well as increasingly hot weather in some areas, pose additional challenges to the humanitarian response.

An estimated 1.6 million people still live in informal settlements, mostly in temporary shelters or tents, with very basic living conditions and limited access to services. They urgently need increased services such as clean water, adequate sanitation, and access to information about available services and social protection schemes.

Status update

The Turkish government continues to lead the earthquake response in Turkey in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority of Turkey (AFAD) and with the support of the Turkish Red Crescent. The international humanitarian community continues to support the government in providing immediate assistance to the affected population. In a collaborative effort, humanitarian partners mobilize emergency teams and relief operations, providing relief items such as food, medical supplies, shelter, hygiene and dignity kits, and water, sanitation and hygiene assistance, among other basic needs.

The earthquake-affected areas continue to be affected by difficult weather conditions, particularly those living in informal settlements and tent cities. This includes heavy rains combined with high winds causing floods and destroying tents and containers. On April 20, a severe storm occurred in the Pazardzhik district of Kahramanmaraş. Tents and containers in both official and unofficial sites were blown up and damaged, exposing some of the affected families to harsh weather conditions. Unconfirmed reports indicate that a child was killed and 44 people were injured during the storms, and nearly 300 families were affected.

In parallel, in some regions (such as Hatay Province), the increasingly hot weather will require adaptation and mitigation measures for emergency shelters.

In addition, several earthquakes occurred over the past few days in several provinces, according to Turkey’s National Disaster Management Authority (AFAD). A 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit Elazig on April 20, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake hit Hatay on April 17, and another 3.8-magnitude earthquake hit Muğla Province on the same day.
